For those of you still trying to figure out what you want to be when you grow up…
I participated in a career interpretation workshop this afternoon based on the Myers-Briggs personality test.
My freshman year, I came into college as a Construction Science major. This made sense. It was the smart choice. It’s the “family business” and I was pretty much guarunteed a 50k+ job right out of college. Then after a year of learning about concrete, steel, and lumber (and a huge downturn in the construction industry), I decided to stop doing what made sense and start doing what made me happy. For me, this was Sociology.
I’m in my first sociology class this semester, and so far I am enjoying myself. But… I am a thinker. What am I going to do with a sociology degree? This is where the career interpretation workshop came in.
My results affirmed my self-placement in Sociology. Turns out, Sociologist was the number two job matched to my personality. First, was Commercial Art Director, and third was Musician/Songwriter. Perfect! Looks like I’m on the right track.
One of the biggest myths about making a career choice is that you are going to be stuck in whatever you choose. This is one of the things that makes school, and trying to figure out a major/career path so stressful. Did you know the average American changes careers seven times in their lifetime? It is important to realize that your career is a choice, when you’re 50 as much as when you’re in college. The only way you’re going to be stuck doing something that you don’t want to do is if you allow yourself to be stuck.
Final thought: Don’t worry so much. Things change—that’s the beauty of life. Do what makes you happy right now, go with the flow, and enjoy the ride that life takes you on. In the meantime, if you’re feeling confused and stressed out trying to figure out what you’re going to be when you grow up, I strongly recommend taking one of these career interpretation evaluations or workshops.
